David and Jacinta's Walks- 2023

Stanage End, Stanage Edge and The Standege Pole After a six-week layoff for David, we went out to do this walk which we last did on January 2nd. The weather was better than it had been for most of the month. Jacinta- raring to go! We made it up to The Edge and along to the Stanedge Pole without any problems. It's an easy ramble but it was ideal for testing out David's foot and the boot insoles after the six weeks "on the bench".  Stanedge Lodge from The Pole All seemed well and we came back down to the path below The Edge- with the added bonus of the climbers and the occasional millstone discarded in the bracken. Abandoned Millstones Although there was quite a few climbers, the Stanage North area was more or less deserted. The Marble Wall area (Stanage North) It was lovely to be out together again and, and although not a long walk, it was really nice after such a long break. 6.9 miles, 270m ascent, 3¾ easy hours.

Moscar, Stanage Edge and Bamford Edge This was the first walk (Walk 10) chosen from "Day Walks in the Peak District" as recommended to us by friends. Easter Sunday was forecast to be dry and somewhat sunny so we went off to Stanage; being a Bank Holiday weekend, most of the parking spots were full, or nearly so but we were able to park at our usual spot at Moscar Lodge and started the route at Point 8 in the book. We worked our way up to Stanage End in the heavy mist and early morning chill. At High Neb the mist and we were able to go down to the Hollin Bank car park in the clear. Stanage- after the mist cleared At the car park we grabbed a welcome cup of coffee from the Peaky Grinders horsebox and continued with the rest of the route. A nice cup of coffee (and a crafty Kitkat) The next section (first in the guidebook) was across fields and woods, and led us pleasantly away from the edge and towards Bamford Road.   Stanage End, Stanedge Pole, Ughill and Moscar It was Bank Holiday Monday and we decided to do a walk that we had not done in 2022- so something of a winning combination. We parked at Stanage End and walked up to the end of Stanage Edge. It was an amazingly clear, sunny day with great views far and wide. The Kinder Plateau- from Win Hill to Fairbrook Naze We walked along, past High Neb, and turned eastwards past Stanedge Pole pole and down to Redmires Reservoir. This area was very popular, not surprising given its nearness to Sheffield. Our route turned northwards across some fields and then across rough moorland, crossing a stream and the Sheffield road just before the incongruously named Surrey Farm. Stream crossing before Surrey Farm We crossed several fields up to the isolated Crawshaw Lodge with its Quaker cemetery (not Jewish, as David had mis-remembered). It would be good to go in and explore it sometime. The noisy peacocks that are sometimes around the lodge were not there...
